How much faith do they have in Dejounte Murray?

Despite tearing his ACL at the start of the 2018-2019 season, the San Antonio Spurs still worked towards an extension with Dejounte Murray before he made his return to the floor. The two sides agreed on a four-year extension worth $64 million back in October of 2019.

But now that they’ve seen the return on a product they are heavily invested, how much faith do the Spurs have in their 23-year-old point guard?

Murray made a strong return to the floor, averaging: 10.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.7 steals on a 47/37/79 shooting split in a shortened 2019-2020 season. His defensive prowess continued, but his ceiling as a scorer has yet to be determined.

If San Antonio isn’t “all in” on Murray, this draft has a plethora of point guard prospects: LaMelo Ball, Cole Anthony, Killian Hayes, Tyrese Haliburton, Nico Mannion, and Theo Madelon.

The Spurs have always been a winning basketball club, at least it sure seems like forever. No one’s doubting that they could rebound from this season with the likes of Murray, DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge on the roster.

Should they pivot towards drafting a point guard with their first-round selection (11th overall) this year? If the Spurs are confident in Murray’s return to form, then their best bet may be elsewhere.
