2016 NBA Redraft: Too soon for conclusions and answers

#6 Pick: Jamal Murray (Originally: Buddy Hield)

Buddy Hield and Jamal Murray have been pretty similar in terms of production so far in the league so either player makes sense here. The reason I chose Murray over Hield is solely a matter of age. The potential for Murray is higher given that even after four seasons in the league he is not as old as Hield was in his rookie season. While taking the more NBA ready player to pair with Anthony Davis did make some sense at the time potential should have been the priority.

While Hield has been the more consistent scorer over his career, Murray is no slouch in that department and is a better passer and rebounder for his position. Murray fits more seamlessly with Jrue Holiday as well, blending the defensive mindset of Holiday with the offense-first Murray would help with his development and still open the door to early success for the team together.

This move may compliment the DeMarcus Cousins trade, which occurred in the middle of the following season. The Cousins trade had the chance to be successful for the Pelicans, as they saw their most successful stretch of the Davis era during the first full season after the trade before Cousins’ injury. That being said, keeping Murray and finding a different trade to build around Davis could have led to similar results. Davis simply needed the right talent around him.
