2016 NBA Redraft: Too soon for conclusions and answers

#4 Pick: Jaylen Brown (Originally: Dragan Bender)

This is a risky change as many credit the culture in Boston for Jaylen Brown’s development but he fits this team’s need so well that it is hard to pass up. Coming off of a strong rookie season for Devin Booker and Alex Len completing his second season the Suns decided to go with Dragan Bender. This was bad at the time and only looks worse with Bender potentially already finding himself out of the league this coming season.

The difference in mentality that Jaylen Brown brings to this Suns team is immeasurable. He has a defensive mindset and is willing to defer when needed on offense. Fitting in with Devin Booker and complimenting each other’s games from the start would enable them to develop perfectly. Rather than being two young talents looking for their own shots at all costs Booker and Brown have complimentary games.

This would have made coaching both young guards even easier as they would readily be able to work together to develop. Not taking Bender would help give Alex Len free range to develop in a situation with no pressure.

Finally, if the Suns drafted Brown and realized what they had in him early they would not have needed to take a chance on Josh Jackson the following season. Possibly taking De’Aaron Fox over Jackson to pair with Brown, Booker and the other lottery pick the Suns have in this redraft sounds like a recipe for success.
