2016 NBA Redraft: Too soon for conclusions and answers

#2 Pick: Brandon Ingram (Originally: Brandon Ingram)

All that being said above, Brandon Ingram is clearly a star and the Lakers nailed this pick as well. Even in the years where he produced slower than expected he averaged 9.4 points and 4.0 rebounds. Nagging injuries, tanking and a scary health situation marred his time with the Lakers leading to him being one of the expendable pieces in the Anthony Davis situation.

Soon into his time in New Orleans Pelicans’ tenure, it was clearly evident that he should have been more highly protected. The Lakers are in a strong position to lock down the top seed in the West should the season resume so they are unlikely to be bothered by the swap. But Ingram arrived in full this season as a full-blown All-Star.

During his breakout season in New Orleans, he posted averages of 24.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in just over 34.3 minutes per game. He rebounded from a down shooting season last year to shoot 38.7 percent from long range.

While his usage will undoubtedly go down the more he plays with Zion Williamson that may not be the worst thing for either player. Ingram’s stardom will help ease the burden of progress Williamson will face. On the other hand, having a star on the same timelines as Ingram allows him to grow and thrive as he learns the game.
