The Bucks got a little too cute with this pick. Thon Maker was a tape sensation with no actual gameplay against competition the league trusted as a barometer. After knocking it out of the park with the Giannis Antetokounmpo pick it is understandable where their confidence came from. With three centers on the roster already, however, there are just better options.
Taking a different kind of gamble makes some sense though. Caris LeVert was coming off an injury-riddled career at Michigan but luckily we are armored with hindsight and know that LeVert is able to stay somewhat healthy. He does deal with some nagging injuries but the potential is limitless.
In his second season, he only missed 11 games and was looking to be on the road to being an All-Star last season before suffering a freak leg injury that kept him out the majority of the season. In a strange season with Kyrie Irving in tow for a short-handed Brooklyn Nets team, LeVert averaged 17.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists in only 29 minutes per game. He also improved to a 38.1 percent 3-point shooter.
LeVert may end up being expendable in Brooklyn as they look to trade for another star but he should be able to fit well alongside Anteteokounmpo and Middleton. They have already lost out on Brogdon in this draft but this is a nice recovery move.
