2016 NBA Redraft: Too soon for conclusions and answers

#9 Pick: Buddy Hield (Originally: Jakob Poltl)

Speaking of ill-conceived trades, the Raptors obtained this first-round pick as part of a large package the Knicks gave up to bring in Andrea Bargnani. Poltl has a lot of potential and made sense as a backup center to Jonas Valanciunas with Bismack Biyombo on the way out of town. Given that he was part of the Kawhi Leonard trade makes this pick even more defensible but we will be operating under the premise that that trade is still feasible using other prospects.

This is where the slide stops for Buddy Hield. He is still a highly productive player and would have fit right in as a high-quality role player off the bench for the Raptors and eventually replaced DeMar DeRozan in the starting lineup after the big trade.

Hield was NBA-ready and would have fit in well on a team contending for the top of the Eastern Conference. He has played in over 80 games in three of his four seasons and has only missed 2 total games. He is a lethal shooter from long range, having a “down” season this year only shooting 39.5 percent.

Hield may end up being a one-dimensional player, peaking as an explosive bench scorer for a playoff team. Realizing this potential immediately for the Raptors would have gone a long way to maximizing his value overall.
