Phoenix Suns: Draft prospects for the team to consider
By Jono Perilli
Tyrese Maxey
This is a pick that proves to be questionable, yet it makes sense for the Suns to take a chance on Tyrese Maxey.
Maxey is a 6’3″ point guard out of Kentucky, who has a fantastic offensive skillset that has been sure to jump out to the Suns scouting team. Maxey is an effective scorer with great potential when finishing in the paint and on the mid-range.
He has all the marks of a reliable scorer, and with a playstyle similar to that of Lou Williams. But the issue is, he is more a pure scorer than a true combo point guard. While he certainly has the potential to improve into a well-rounded point guard but is it the risk the Suns want to take? Possibly.
While there is a lot of promise behind Maxey, there are some redeeming issues that stand out. Maxey isn’t a reliable playmaker or defender in that matter. While he can improve dramatically, it’s a risk that could that have deep rewards. Maxey is by no means a lottery player, but he certainly has some potential to become a decent guard if he is willing to change his playstyle.
The Suns could have some plans for Maxey, and while it’s doubtful they’ll pick him, there is something there that makes sense. Depending on where the other combo guards are selected, the Suns may have to take their chances with Maxey. If Maxey is willing to switch up his playstyle into a true combo guard, the Suns could make the pick.
The prospects on this list have shown more promise than Maxey, but the chances are that the Suns could go for the risky pick, but it could work out perfectly if done right.
