Redrafting the 2015 NBA Draft: Role players everywhere

#7 Pick: Josh Richardson (Originally: Emmanuel Mudiay)

People may forget the hype that Emmanual Mudiay had coming out of high school given the relative anonymity his professional career has generated but this pick made a lot of sense at the time. Giving them a better version of the same player in hindsight could have improved their roster substantially.

Admittedly the Nuggets are in a weird place in this draft. Myles Turner is the best player available but they already have Jusuf Nurkic, Timofey Mozgov and JaVale McGee on the roster with Nikola Jokic on his way over. Similarly they already have Arron Afflalo, Will Barton, Gary Harris and Ty Lawson on board so taking a point guard does not make much sense either.

Josh Richardson feels like the best answer available, being able to play shooting guard and small forward to give the team some versatility. Richardson is also a strong defender and an efficient scorer. He has shown the willingness to not be the main option in both Miami and Philadelphia, making him a great teammate and someone who would fit the Nuggets mentality in the present day perfectly.

This may have changed what they did the following season where they drafted Jamal Murray and Malik Beasley. Taking two guards after taking Richardson feels unlikely as he would have earned his spot faster than Mudiay did.
