Redrafting the 2015 NBA Draft: Role players everywhere

#28 Pick: Willy Hernangomez (Originally: R.J. Hunter)

Getting a first-round pick to let Doc Rivers leave for the Clippers was brilliant by the Celtics. Using said pick to draft R.J. Hunter, not so much.  The Celtics had been looking for a center to learn from and eventually take Al Horford’s place. Willy Hernangomez has been a per-36 minute All-Star in some rocky situations and learning behind Horford seems like a recipe for success for the Spanish center.

There was a slight delay in coming over for Hernangomez but this is a future play for the Celtics. Seeing him put up 8.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in only 18.4 minutes for the Knicks in his rookie season is stunning. That jumps to 16.0 points and 13.6 rebounds per 36 minutes.

Hernangomez really needs to be given an opportunity to succeed as he has been buried on the bench in Charlotte since moving on from the Knicks are a season and change in the Big Apple. Someone will be taking a chance on him in free agency this summer and will likely be pleasantly surprised. Structure will be key for him and he would have gotten that with Brad Stevens.
