Redrafting the 2015 NBA Draft: Role players everywhere

#26: Stanley Johnson (Originally: Nikola Milutinov)
Admittedly as a Pistons fan I do not have much love for Stanley Johnson. The fact that he peaked in his first season guarding LeBron James in the playoffs tells you basically all you need to know about his tenure in the Motor City. The potential is there and it will randomly entice you. He has stellar defensive chops but never truly put it together on the offensive end.
His best offensive season came in year three, his last full season in Detroit. He averaged 8.7 points and 3.7 rebounds. All of this negativity aside, working with Gregg Popovich could truly help him realize his potential. Stan Van Gundy had a bad habit of inconsistent rotation minutes for Johnson which certainly limited his ability to realize his potential.
Even if he did not get a ton of minutes with the Spurs learning from them in practice could have gone a long way into establishing him in this league for a longer time. Working alongside the famed shooting coach Chip Engelland may also have helped improve his efficiency.
The jury is still out on Nikola Milutinov as he has yet to come to the NBA. Should he come over and be impressive that may change this pick. Until then, I wish Stanley Johnson all the best.
