#12 Pick: Norman Powell (Originally: Trey Lyles)

This pick is still as confusing as it was at the time. While Trey Lyles was a good prospect for Kentucky, the Jazz had so many big men on the roster. The list includes Trevor Booker, Rudy Gobert, Derrick Favors Enes Kanter and more. Lyles finding a spot to get minutes among this group was always unlikely.

This team is in serious need of a point guard but the best one available is possibly Quinn Cook.  So instead we go with Norman Powell. The unselfishness and intelligence he plays with in Toronto fits perfectly with this Quin Snyder-led group and he was slightly more NBA-ready than the other options available. Adding a role player in the lottery is often less than ideal but it is good for a playoff-caliber roster looking for a final bolster.

Powell is a career 35.9 percent 3-point shooter, something the Jazz would greatly benefit from with the aforementioned collection of paint cloggers. He is efficient and knows how to pick his spots appropriately. Filling a similar role to Alec Burks may feel unnecessary but this could have allowed the Jazz to pull the trigger on moving on from Burks sooner as he seemed to be in trade rumors most of his tenure with the team.
