Miami Heat: Ranking the franchise’s last 10 first-round picks
3. Justise Winslow
- Drafted 10th overall in 2015
- Years in Miami: five
After seven years without a first-round pick, the Heat finally used one to draft a player and keep him. In the 2015 draft, the Heat chose 19-year-old forward Justise Winslow, a reigning national champion out of Duke.
As a rookie, the 6’6″ Winslow appeared in 78 games, started in eight of them, averaged 6.4 points and 5.2 rebounds and was named to the All-Rookie Second Team. He marginally improved over his next two years, continuing to show strong defensive abilities and becoming more well-rounded on offense.
In the 2018-19 season, Winslow played point guard while incumbent starter Goran Dragic was sidelined with a knee injury. Winslow thrived and helped the Heat keep afloat while displaying his versatile playstyle. He could handle the ball, defend multiple positions well and shoot 3-pointers at a respectable rate (37.5 percent on 3.9 attempts per game).
That season, Winslow averaged career highs in the following categories: points per game (12.6), assists per game (4.3), made 3-pointers per game (1.5), true shooting percentage (51.3), and PER (12.8).
A back injury limited his 2019-20 season to just 11 games. At the trade deadline, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies for a package centered around Andre Iguodala.
Miami passed on All-Star shooting guard Devin Booker, who was drafted 13th overall by the Phoenix Suns, by instead taking Winslow.
