Boston Celtics: 3 former players who could have helped this season
1. Isaiah Thomas
Just in case there was any doubt in anyone’s mind, Isaiah Thomas has been the most requested player by fans. By a longshot.
Every loss, or even a bad bench performance, and social media goes into a frenzy for why Isaiah Thomas is the answer to the team’s woes. He has a special place in the hearts of Boston fans. Thomas himself has also expressed interest in a reunion, saying he still has love for Boston and wouldn’t mind coming back.
While he hasn’t been the same since his years in Beantown, he still is a capable enough scorer to give Boston’s bench a much-needed boost. He averaged 12.2 points this season, which would rank him second in scoring on the bench behind Marcus Smart.
Even then, Smart has seen many starting opportunities this year, so Thomas could have a good case for leading bench scorer on the team.
Where some people, including myself, have doubts is on the defensive end. IT4 has never been a good defender, which is to be expected. However, paired with Marcus Smart and good defending wings, IT’s weaknesses can be covered up just enough for the team to remain solid defensively.
Former Celtics teams have never had a good defending point guard since Rajon Rondo, but the team has seen much success despite a capable defender at the point guard position.
That gives me hope that IT could see an important role on the team, and the fans would embrace him like no other.
