3 questions for the Golden State Warriors if the season is over
What will they do with their first-round draft selection?
The brightest silver lining to a year spent losing is the draft compensation. As of the hiatus, the Warriors had the NBA’s worst record. So, per Tankathon.com, they’ve got a 14 percent chance at landing a top-3 pick in the upcoming draft.
But would the Warriors actually move forward with that draft pick? Some are skeptical. If they land the first overall pick, for instance, that could provide a lengthy list of opportunities.
Golden State could trade for a true third star to pair with Curry and Thompson, or very well use that pick to dump Wiggins and his three-year contract that has $94.7 million remaining.
On the other end, however, the Warriors still don’t have a long-term fixture at center. And fortunately, this draft class features a plethora of talented big men across multiple levels.
Guys like Obi Toppin, James Wiseman, or Onyeka Okungwu could all make an immediate impact on this Warriors team. But it wouldn’t take a top-3 pick to secure any center, just the best available.
So, in a rare change of circumstance, the Warriors are a team to watch once the draft arrives. Will they trade or will they stay? Which big man would they try and incorporate into the next leg of this dynasty run? Or if they do trade, who will complete their next ‘Big 3?’
Because in terms of help, the Warriors’ third All-Star didn’t inspire much confidence this year…
