With a pivotal offseason on the horizon, not every member of the Atlanta Hawks is destined to return for the 2020-21 season.
It might not have been obvious in the standings this season, but the Atlanta Hawks are on the precipice of playoff contention. They entered the season pause at 20-47 – second-worst record in the Eastern Conference – but the young building blocks are in place.
The one unmovable piece on the Hawks is guard Trae Young. The 21-year-old went to his first All-Star Game this season and is well on his way to fulfilling his superstar potential with the franchise.

The team will also plan on building around John Collins and Clint Capela, who has yet to play in a game with the team following his trade deadline acquisition.
There’s also plenty of depth behind the team’s youth movement. In recent years, the Hawks have drafted or acquired Bruno Fernando, Cam Reddish, De’Andre Hunter and Kevin Huerter, all of whom have the potential to become significant contributors down the line.
With anywhere from five to seven sure things returning to the roster in 2020-21, some will have to go, especially if Atlanta wants to add in the draft and maybe even free agency. So who’s not likely to return to the team next season?
There’s one big name excluded from the list: Vince Carter. The 22-year veteran (who has been in the league longer than Young has been alive) has said he plans on retiring at the end of this season. Maybe the COVID-19 plan changes his mind, but he’s given no indication of that at this point.
