Kevin Huerter

Out of Maryland, Kevin Huerter‘s only fault coming into the league is that he was drafted to play next to point guard Trae Young on the Atlanta Hawks. It’s hard to make a name for yourself when playing next to the collegiate star, and then John Collins and Cam Reddish on top of that.

But the Red Mamba, as he was called in college, has displayed a duality to his offense that so many of today’s great shooters lack. Huerter posted 12.2 points this season on a .380 shooting clip from behind-the-arc, while also averaging 6 attempts from deep nightly.

Per Basketball Reference, just 23 players across the league posted that percentage or better on five or more attempts from deep per game. Of them, only three did at the age of 21 or younger: Jaren Jackson Jr, Jayson Tatum, and Huerter. Not bad company at all.

The one difference? You’ve assuredly heard of Tatum, if not on a weekly basis, and no doubt have heard of Jackson, the Memphis Grizzlies unicorn of a power forward. Huerter however, has remained among the shadows for his two years in the league.

That should, and most likely will change, soon. On his current trajectory, Huerter will be one of the better shooters in the NBA within the coming years. Keep an eye on the Red Mamba.
