Minnesota Timberwolves: Kevin Garnett’s three best trash talk stories

No. 3: “Big Baby” Davis
This one ranks fairly low on the list for a very similar reason to why the last entry didn’t make the list: we have no idea if this is true.
So here’s what we do know. It’s 2008, and the Celtics are in the middle of a blowout victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. The game goes to commercial, and we come back and see KG and Glen Davis sitting on two opposite ends of the Celtics bench, and Davis looks like he’s been crying.
During the timeout, Garnett was going in on the subs who’d come in, saying they weren’t playing with enough intensity. Davis steps in, presumably to remind Garnett that the Celtics are killing right now and it might be nice to take it easy, and Garnett proceeds to shatter Davis’ worldview and caused Davis to cry.
Now here’s where the rumor comes in. Allegedly, after the tensions had settled slightly, Garnett leaned over and said something along the lines of “stop crying you big baby”.
And thus, a nickname was born.
Allegedly. There are actually a few rumors about the genesis of the name. According to an unsourced rumor on the New York Post, it came when Davis was nine, and felt he was being bullied by an opposing team. He began to cry, and his coach scolded him, calling him a baby.
According to Davis himself, it’s simply because he was a big baby, weighing 14 pounds at birth. To put that in context, the largest baby ever born weighed 23 pounds, so Davis would’ve been getting up there.
Then again, it’s likely this could be true. In my (admittedly preliminary) research, I didn’t find an instance of Davis being called “Big Baby” before 2008. Could it be that Garnett brought a now-famous nickname to life?
