Ranking the 5 best All-Star jerseys in the history of the NBA
By Luke Duffy
4. 1989 and 2003
This isn’t a cop-out because these jerseys are too difficult to decide between, but rather they are so similar that they can go on the list together. The 1989 jersey is really the one that gets the nod here. Used for the game in Houston it had such a classic and clean look, that would almost remind you of a Team USA jersey (the white one anyway).
They brought the same design back in 2003 though, and the reason it gets the mention is because of how it was modernized just a bit in order to make it better. It became a baggier jersey, much more in line with the style at the time. That game was played in Indiana.
The links don’t stop there, however, with Michael Jordan appearing in the 1989 and 2003 showcases. 2003 was special because he went up against Bryant in a teacher versus pupil moment which takes on even more significance now than it ever has.
Also interesting was the fact that Isiah Thomas played alongside Jordan in the 1989 game, and was his coach by the time the 2003 exhibition came around. Vince Carter, then of the Toronto Raptors, giving up his starting spot for Jordan in 2003 was one of those great moments that has been forgotten to time.
The jerseys are strong and slick, with basic colors dominating the scheme. Red and blue have been used so frequently together for obvious reasons, but if these two games taught us anything, it is that the red and white combination actually works a good deal better. Great jerseys from great times, featuring some of the best players ever.
