Next season could be the start of a championship run. At the start of free agency, the Brooklyn Nets should consider pursuing these three players.

The championship window will officially open for the Brooklyn Nets at the start of the 2020-2021 season. With a healthy Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving leading the way, the term “championship or bust” could very well be the talk of sports radio in New York City. The organization will need to improve the roster if they plan to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA finals.

With a select few guaranteed spots on the roster for next season, team general manager Sean Marks has his work cut out for him. The trio of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and DeAndre Jordan are locks, but who will round out the remaining roster spots?

One rumor that seems to brought up frequently is the franchise’s pursuit of a third star. The most common name linked is Washington Wizards shooting guard Bradley Beal. Adding Beal to the roster would give the Nets their big three, but would limit them in the free agent market.

For example, acquiring a third star would involve trading multiple players from the current roster. Names that are often linked to trade rumors are: Spencer Dinwiddie, Caris LeVert, and Jarrett Allen.

Brooklyn should not be eager to pull the trigger on a trade. Mortgaging the future of the organization by giving up multiple draft picks would bring back bad memories of the awful trade with the Boston Celtics. As expected, the Wizards would demand a haul in return for their star shooting guard. It is not worth the risk for the Nets to give up valuable assets for a third max contract.

The team should prioritize signing players in free agency. Three potential free agents for the Nets to consider should include Toronto Raptors forward/center Serge Ibaka, Miami Heat guard Goran Dragic, and Oklahoma City Thunder forward Danilo Gallinari.
