Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Draft 2020: Top 3 prospects to target
By Tony Pesta
1. LaMelo Ball
In the event the Cleveland Cavaliers strike gold and secure the No.1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, they should absolutely set their sights on LaMelo Ball.
No other prospect in the draft has as much upside as Ball. He has grown exponentially as a player and is going to have a bright future in the NBA if his work ethic continues to bring major developments in his game.
In high school, Ball made a name for himself by being a prolific scorer. Since then, his unlimited creativity with the basketball has helped him become a top-tier playmaker as he led the NBL in assists at 18 years of age.
Ball is the best passer and ball handler in this class. Conveniently, playmaking is one of the Cavaliers’ biggest weaknesses. It goes without saying Ball would help solve this issue for Cleveland.
He has great size for the guard position, standing at 6’8″ and possessing lanky arms. He has a high basketball IQ and is skilled at utilizing his long strides to snake around defenders and finish around the rim. Ball has a number of moves to score over the defense including an efficient floater from the lane.
In 12 games overseas, Ball averaged 17.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He is skilled enough to do a little bit of everything and can bring a sense of versatility that is heavily sought after in the modern NBA.
Ball is ready to run an NBA offense and this is exactly what the Cavaliers need. There are questions surrounding his consistency as a shooter and abilities on defense but Ball is capable of bringing the Cavs to the next level. This is a no brainer, the Cavaliers have to be targetting LaMelo in the 2020 NBA Draft.
