4. Victor Oladipo (2013)

  • Pick: 2
  • Orlando seasons: 3 (2013-2016)
  • Orlando averages: 224 games, 33.2 minutes, 15.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.6 steals, 0.5 blocks, 1.1 3-pointers made
  • Orlando slash line: .431/.339/.808
  • Picked before: CJ McCollum (10), Giannis Antetokounmpo (15)

Victor Oladipo was not your typical college prospect. He played three years at Indiana before turning pro after being named a consensus First Team All-American and Big Ten Player of the Year. He was also National Co-Defensive Player of the Year with Jeff Withey of Kansas.

Taking Oladipo with the second pick in the 2013 draft was the right move. Everything that Orlando did after that was wrong. First, they tried to turn him into a point guard even though he wasn’t one. After Oladipo showed signs of improvement in his second season off the ball, along came Scott Skiles.

The veteran head coach decided to run the offense through Nikola Vucevic instead. In Oladipo’s final year in with the Magic – and Skiles’ only one as the coach – Vooch led the squad in usage percentage, shots, and scoring.

Oladipo was traded along with Domanatas Sabonis to OKC for Serge Ibaka in one of the worse trades in recent memory. Oladipo and Sabonis were then moved to the Indiana Pacers in the Paul George deal, where they’ve both become All-Star players. Orlando got only 56 games from Ibaka.

That just makes losing two All-Star players for nothing even harder on the fans, though. Fortunately, the general manager who made that trade is no longer with the team.

Plenty of teams passed on Giannis Antetokounmpo, so it’s hard to blame Orlando for that blunder or any other team for that matter. Oladipo is better than CJ McCollum and was the higher-rated prospect coming out of Indiana.
