6. Jonathan Isaac (2017)

  • Pick: 6th
  • Orlando seasons: 3 (2017-present)
  • Orlando averages: 134 games, 26.0 minutes, 9.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, 1.1 steals, 1.1 assists, 1.0 3-pointers made
  • Orlando slash line: .432/.330/.794
  • Picked before: Donovan Mitchell (13), Bam Adebayo (14)

Orlando is one of the many teams that will regret passing on Donovan Mitchell for a long time, but watching Bam Adebayo kill it on the Miami Heat of all teams has to be even tougher. Like most teams, the Magic could use either guy, but they got a good player in Jonathan Isaac.

It may be a little controversial putting Isaac this low, but these choices are made based on where these guys are right now, not where they’ll be in three years.

Isaac was drafted on potential and because of his wingspan. His numbers at Florida State weren’t spectacular, but the flashes were there.

Injuries limited Isaac to 27 games in his rookie season. Fortunately, he didn’t miss much on a 25 win team that featured Jonathon Simmons as the leader in minutes played. Frank Vogel was fired, and Isaac got his second coach in his second season. Having multiple coaches seems to be a recurring theme for Magic players.

Enter Steve Clifford. Isaac is a perfect fit for the defensive-minded coach, who’s known for player development. Isaac started in 64 of the 75 regular-season games he played and all four playoff games against the Toronto Raptors. But he took a real step forward this year.

Isaac was averaging career-highs in pretty much every category this season before he went down with a knee injury. He only played 32 games but still finished top 20 in the league in blocks per game. Isaac was a darkhorse candidate for Defensive Player of the Year before getting hurt. He at least would’ve gotten some votes for one of the All-Defensive teams.
