Carmelo Anthony thinks that had the Denver Nuggets met the Orlando Magic in the 2009 NBA Finals, that they would have swept them. He is wrong.

With the NBA season currently on an indefinite hiatus, it has been cool to see current and former players take to social media to interact with fans, as well as one another. Late last week those who tuned in to Dwyane Wade‘s Instagram Live feed were treated to a conversation with good friend Carmelo Anthony.

A conversation that was enjoyable and hitting on some of the topics you’d like to hear these two chat honestly about, until the 2009 season came up. This was one in which Anthony’s Denver Nuggets squad lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.

All well and good, until Anthony brought up the fact that he believed that, had the Nuggets made the finals, they would have swept the Orlando Magic, who instead lost to the Lakers in five games that year. He also mentioned that if they’d won the first two games in Los Angeles they would have swept the Lakers too, but that’s for another day.

As is so often the case, time has eradicated the memory of a former great team or player in the league. In this case it is the Magic. So flippantly did Anthony throw out the sweeping the Magic remark, that it is worth going back in time, to see if this would have been the case.

Despite remaining as impartial as possible, it is actually quite clear that not only would the Nuggets absolutely not have swept the Magic, they likely wouldn’t even have been favorites in a series between the two either. Which would have been great to see, two franchises going for their first championship. Don’t believe me? Here are three very good reasons why.
