Toronto Raptors: 8 players to eye in the 2020 NBA Draft
By Nate Friesen
5. Tre Jones (Duke)
Best-case comparison: Fred VanVleet; Realistic comparison: Tyus Jones
Tre Jones is a 6’3” point guard from Duke. He plays like a solid 10-year veteran with good passing instincts who functions as a great leader of a team’s defense and is a much-improved shooter.
Tre is somewhat of an exception on this list as I’ve said repeatedly that the Raptors would be better off going for the center of the future. However, I believe Tre could be a solid backup guard that could play alongside both Fred VanVleet and Kyle Lowry.
Jones is a really good passer, a much-improved shooter and an elite level perimeter defender. In his sophomore year at Duke, he averaged 16.2 points, 6.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game on really efficient shooting splits. He’s an especially great passer and scorer in the pick and roll, but his ability to score in isolation scenarios is quite limited.
Additionally, Jones gets to the free-throw line and makes his attempts at a relatively high clip (77.1 percent on 4.8 attempts per game). On the downside, Tre has a fairly high turnover rate at 2.7 turnovers per game this season. This is certainly something he will need to address to thrive at the next level.
All-in-all, Tre Jones would be a really good third guard behind Lowry and VanVleet. Especially if the Raptors can get him with the 28th overall pick, that would be a good value for Jones.
