Los Angeles Lakers: Anthony Davis’ top five games of 2019-20
3. Jan 31, 2020: Davis, Lakers fall short in an emotional home game against Portland Trail Blazers
The Lakers came into this one with heavy hearts because it was their first home game following the deaths of Kobe Bryant, his 13-year old daughter Gianna and seven other passengers who were killed in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26.
Both teams kicked off the contest by taking 24-second and 8-second violations before getting on with the business of participating in what could have considered a meaningless basketball game, given the circumstances.
Although the Lakers took a slim 62-60 lead into the break, the Portland Trail Blazers came out with a sense of purpose in the second half, scoring 43 points in the third quarter, and led by as many as 12 points in the final frame.
Los Angeles responded by scoring nine straight points but it wasn’t enough to prevent Portland from coming away with a hard-fought 127-119 victory.
Davis had a great all-around performance, finishing with 37 points, 16 rebounds, six assists, and five blocks.
Unfortunately, Damian Lillard stole the show, scoring 48 points (including 23 in the third quarter) to along with 10 assists and nine rebounds. Lillard also knocked down seven of his 12 attempts from beyond the arc.
The Blazers also got a huge outing from Hassan Whiteside, who contributed 30 points, 13 boards, five blocks, and two steals.
