Who will be the next head coach?

Ah, yes. Truly an age old dilemma for Madison Square Garden, it’s affiliates, fans of the New York Knicks, and the front office as a whole. Who’s going to be the head coach next season?

For starters, current interim coach Mike Miller makes a lot of sense. His immediate background is with New York’s G-League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks: a club and league designed entirely for development and management of young talent.

And he hasn’t done a bad job since taking over for his predecessor David Fizdale, who was fired after the team started 4-18 on the year, or a 15-game win pace.

Under Miller, New York has gone 17-27, which is good for about a 32-game win pace on the year. Not terrible when considering his inexperience and the hand he was dealt.

But it seems the New York Knicks front office will set their sights higher, to the surprise of none. Names like Tom Thibodeau, Kenny Atkinson, Jeff Van Gundy, and Mark Jackson have all been mentioned.

The current favorite, to the distress of most fans, seems to be Thibodeau. The 2011 Coach of the Year most recently coached the absolute mess that was Jimmy Butler‘s Minnesota Timberwolves.

Before the Knicks can make any pitches to free agents, of which there are few that make sense for New York, or put together a proper plan for next season; they’ve got to find their next head coach.
