Ranking the 15 best performances in the NBA this season
5. Luka Doncic takes down San Antonio (11/18/19)
You would think a player coming off a historically great Rookie of the Year season wouldn’t be able to once again catch the league off-guard in Year 2.
Somehow, the exceeding of expectations is exactly what Luka Doncic has done as a sophomore, with per-game averages that have been surpassed only four other times in NBA history — 3x by Oscar Robertson and once by Russell Westbrook.
The pinnacle of what has truly been an MVP-caliber season came against the San Antonio Spurs, where Doncic poured in a career-high 42 points along with 12 assists and 11 rebounds.
It was only the 16th-such outing in NBA history. As you can imagine, Luka was the youngest among those contemporaries, sealing the victory with what has become a patented step-back 3-pointer to extend the lead to five with under 30 seconds remaining.
This performance might seem pedestrian compared to others both on this list and throughout his short career, but that’s only due to the incredibly high bar he’s set with the third-most triple-doubles since entering the league last season.
Doncic’s greatness is without the proper words to describe it. We can only bask in its beauty and try to savor every moment from a career that’s on the path towards historic levels of greatness.
