Ranking the 15 best performances in the NBA this season
6. Anthony Davis makes quick work of the Grizzlies (10/29/19)
By the time Anthony Davis had officially become a Laker, it felt as if he’d been part of the organization for months. Such is the result of a drawn-out trade request that dominated headlines until season’s end.
Given all it took to get Davis to LA with the constant media attention and massive trade package, you started to wonder whether Davis was worth it all.
An incredible talent, yes, but one who couldn’t get more than two playoff berths out of seven seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans. Was he really the player LeBron needed to help restore the Lakers’ championship glory?
It took the seven-time All-Star all of four games in the purple and gold to squash that notion, recording the quickest — on record — 40-point 20-rebound game in NBA history against the Memphis Grizzlies by playing just 31 minutes.
He made 26-of-27 free-throw attempts and committed zero turnovers, the entirety of his damage done without stepping onto the court in the final frame in a 29-point blowout.
Davis might not be one to elevate a team by himself, but this performance reiterated his superstar status and highlighted an incredible impact that can fulfill the title dreams of the Lakers franchise.
