Boston Celtics: 15 players you forgot played for the Celtics
15. Shaquille O’Neil
A lot of young basketball fans might not realize this, but the Boston Celtics were the last team that Shaquille O’Neil played for before retiring in 2011. There are a plethora of accomplishments that Shaq has made throughout his career, but he will be most remembered for joining forces with a young rookie named Kobe Bryant and winning four NBA championships together. Shaq and Kobe became the best dynamic duo the NBA has ever seen.
Shaq played for a handful of teams after being drafted first overall by the Orlando Magic in 1992, including the Lakers, Suns, Heat, and the Cleveland Cavaliers before joining the Celtics for the 2010-2011 season. He is a 15-time NBA All-Star, a four-time NBA Champion, a three-time Finals MVP, and also earned league MVP in 2000.
It’s worth mentioning that when Shaq played for the Celtics, even if for just a brief season, it allowed for Doc Rivers to slide Garnett into his more natural power forward position, which allowed Rivers to keep both Garnett and Shaq on the floor at the same time.
As Shaq was nearing the end of his career, in only 37 total games with the Celtics, Shaq averaged 9.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He wore No. 36 before Marcus Smart and was often referred to as the Jolly Green Giant.
