Boston Celtics: 15 players you forgot played for the Celtics
9. Sam Cassell
Sam Cassell joined the Boston Celtics as an unrestricted free agent near the end of the 2008 season. But prior to joining the Celtics as a 15-year veteran, Cassell was already an NBA All-Star and a two-time NBA champion from his earlier years with the Houston Rockets in the early 90’s.
Cassell would play 17 games for the Celtics as the team walked into the playoffs, and became part of what was the best bench in the NBA that consisted of Eddie House, James Posey, Leon Powe, and PJ Brown. He averaged 7.6 points per game to end the regular season and only 4.5 points per game throughout the playoffs.
It wasn’t so much his production that propelled the Celtics into winning their 17th NBA championship, but it was more linked to him being a well-established veteran and his additional leadership qualities that made Cassell a perfect fit for the Doc Rivers-led Celtics championship team.
Game seven of the ‘08 NBA Finals was the last game Cassell played and then he quickly got into coaching. He spent five years as an assistant with the Wizards (2009-2014) and is currently a coaching assistant for Doc Rivers with the LA Clippers.
