International Incident

While most of Carter’s biggest moments came during NBA play, one of his most vicious in-game dunks came in the 2000 Summer Olympics. The United States was playing against France, who had a center named Frederic Weis. Standing at 7’2’’, the Americans were unlikely to face anyone as tall as this man.

Vince Carter, the leader of this version of Team USA was more than up to the challenge. Carter stole the ball in transition and jumped over Weis. This monumental slam shocked the crowd and teammates alike. Carter would lead Team USA in scoring and would lead them on to the gold medal.

For a player who never won an NBA championship, this is medal is possibly the crowning overall achievement of his career. Carter showed he could be the best player on a team of stars and had the spotlight moment of the tournament. Carter was a true star who was going through a tough time after Tracy McGrady had moved on from the Raptors.

Possibly the best part of this moment is the name it was given. The French media, trying to make the best of a bad situation, dubbed the dunk “le dunk de la mort”, which translates to the Dunk of Death. As Twitter likes to send out condolences to those who are dunked on today one can only imagine the social media response to this dunk in real-time.
