Chicago Bulls: Noting the 3 best things from the season
2. Coby White’s emergence
Listen, if you’re the seventh overall pick in the NBA Draft, big things are expected of you. If you’re Alec Jacoby White and you’re that pick in a city like Chicago, buckle your seat belt because the ride might be a tad bumpy.
Like most 19-year-old rookies, Coby White‘s season has been a rollercoaster. The former North Carolina Tar Heel kicked off his career by scoring 17 points in the season-opener, then poured in 25 points two nights later against the Memphis Grizzlies. Maybe the NBA was easier than the ACC after all.
Not so fast. White then scored 31 points in his next five games. Total. That includes a 1-point showing versus the Indiana Pacers.
Yes, he’s had rough patches – find me a rookie point guard who hasn’t – but Coby White has displayed a fearless nature and a tenacious appetite for scoring all season.
Speaking of scoring, White has a special knack for getting buckets in a hurry. 10 times this season he’s made four or more 3-pointers in a game, twice he’s hit seven from deep in a game. Remember, he turned 20-years-old in February.
It suddenly seems like ages ago, but we can’t forget about Coby White’s blazing stretch run that led to his first (finally) starting nod in the Chicago Bulls’ 65th game. In his last nine games, White scored at least 19 points in each one, 33 or more three times and knocked down at least two 3-pointers in all nine games.
He’s young and there’s plenty of room for growth, but Coby White’s maturation this season has been one of the few bright spots for this franchise.
