#5: Tyson Chandler

This one feels inevitable. Tyson Chandler probably played his final game in his career, and we didn’t even know. Chandler has tallied up a fantastic career in the NBA, going down as one of the best defensive big-men in the current generation of the NBA, even having a Team USA Olympics appearance too.

What’s craziest is that Chandler has been in the NBA since 2001, and is still going. But unfortunately, Chandler has teased the possibility of retiring. Well, teased isn’t a good word to describe it. Chandler has signaled that his season is most likely his last.

"Tyson Chandler: “I know I definitely want to play one more year … I know next year will be it” – Dave McMenamin (April 10 2019)"

Chandler, who’s 37, has spent most of his career floating around several NBA teams, but his tenures in Dallas and New York are his most well-known. Chandler doesn’t have anything to really play for, he’s already got a championship ring apart of the 2010-11 Mavericks squad. So his career in the NBA has been fairly successful already. There are some good reasons for him to retire, including his current situation with the Houston Rockets.

So far in his final NBA season, Chandler has played 26 games, in which he has averaged 1.3 points per game with a mere 2.5 rebounds per game, playing only 8.4 minutes per game. But since the Rockets have implemented their small-ball lineup, Chandler hasn’t played at all.

His final game came on the 9th of February, in a match against the Utah Jazz. Chandler literally played the final second of the game, in which he was to guard the paint against Rudy Gobert in an attempt to keep the Jazz from tying or winning the game on a buzzer-beater. But, the Rockets failed to guard the perimeter, leaving Bojan Bogdanovic open from a buzzer-beater three, breaking the hearts of Rockets fans and players alike.

Since the suspension of the season, Chandler has been fixated on the bench. It’s unfortunate since Chandler is still a serviceable defender when needed, but the Rockets small-ball lineup was of some success.

It’s almost inevitable when we’ll get the news of Chandler’s retirement. Don’t be surprised to see the announcement happen in the summer, or even as soon as we get more clarity on the COVID-19 situation and its impact on NBA play.
