10. John Starks (1988-89/1998-2000)

Before he became one of the most beloved players in New York Knicks history, John Starks actually found his way into the NBA via the Warriors, who signed the undrafted free agent in October of 1988.

He’d played just one year at Oklahoma State — as well as multiple junior colleges — where he averaged 15.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game, clearly enough for Golden State to see something worth taking a chance on.

There weren’t many highlights for Starks during his rookie season before he was released by the Dubs, prompting a move to the Continental Basketball Association and eventually the Big Apple.

He helped raise the profile of the Knicks to that of a perennial contender with his defensive tenacity and unbridled confidence, even making the All-Star Game in 1994 and taking home Sixth Man of the Year honors in 1996-97.

By January of 1999, however, the Knicks were home to Allen Houston, a talented two-guard in his own right.

New York shipped Starks back to where his NBA career began. In roughly a season and a half, Starks proved to be much-improved the second time around, averaging 14.3 points per game before being dealt to Chicago during the 1999-2000 season.
