It had been an up-and-down season for the San Antonio Spurs before its unexpected interruption. What have been the high points of the season so far?

Before league play was suspended on Wednesday night, the San Antonio Spurs’ playoff hopes were alive – but truthfully only in theory. A playoff berth would have required a nearly perfect winning streak to grab the Western Conference’s eighth seed.

The most frustrating aspect of the Spurs’ season hasn’t been a total lack of good play. Rather, it has been the inability to consistently play to their potential rather than showing a promising flash for a game’s first three quarters or for just a game or two at a time. Each loss seems to showcase one exciting, positive development that is negated by several flaws that cost them the game.

Therefore, there have still been promising signs for the Spurs, despite the ugly win-loss total. Several important young players have looked increasingly comfortable in growing roles. Meanwhile, while they have been unable to sustain good performances, there have been games and stretches of the season when the Spurs looked capable of beating any team on any night.

Ultimately, the Spurs’ long-term franchise success will be more dependent on how they can build on those bright spots and upgrade positions of weaknesses rather than on whether they make the playoffs this year. The Spurs’ front office, coaching staff, and players have work to do in the coming years, but there were reasons for optimism even in this difficult season.

Here we look at four of the best things we saw in the San Antonio Spurs play this year, and discuss what they might mean for the Spurs moving forward.
