Phoenix Suns: 10 stars you forgot played for the Suns
By Jono Perilli
#5: Steve Kerr (1988-89)
Steve Kerr‘s year in Phoenix was that forgotten that, only one image pops up of him in a Phoenix Suns jersey.
Kerr’s prosperous career as a coach and as a player is truly great. As a role player, Kerr was a key piece with the Michael Jordan-Scottie Pippen Chicago Bulls team, which Kerr won five championship rings as a part of. He would then have a role-playing stint with the San Antonio Spurs, apart of the team that featured David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Kerr’s shooting ability made him a key player for any contending team, compared to that of Kyle Korver.
His coaching career would be arguably better, becoming the mastermind for the Golden State Warriors since 2015. The pure dominance by the Warriors and fantastic coaching by Kerr earned the team three championships and a historic 73-9 record in the 2015-16 NBA season. The 73-9 record became the greatest season in NBA history, overtaking Chicago’s 72-10 record in the 1995-96 season, which Kerr was a key-piece of. Crazy.
But there was a point in Steve Kerr’s career that most fans, even the most dedicated forget, that being his rookie season with the Phoenix Suns. After coming out of Arizona, Kerr was picked halfway through the second round.
Kerr averaged 2.1 points per game in 26 games, where he averaged a woeful 6.0 minutes a game. Playing garbage minutes, Kerr was rarely seen in games. At the time, you would have been quite nuts to predict that Kerr was going to have a successful career, especially with how things were going in Phoenix.
After his completely forgotten rookie year, Kerr was on the way to Cleveland in a lackluster trade deal involving a second-rounder. After being given a fair bit of minutes, Kerr was basically only used a spot-up shooter. He eventually got traded again, this time to the Orlando Magic. Then, Kerr would sign a multi-year deal to the Bulls, and the rest is history.
Though it was only his rookie year, Steve Kerr’s time in Phoenix is completely forgotten from the history books. It’s not even a case of being synonymous with a certain team, it’s just that he never played in Arizona.
