Chris Paul to Knicks would kick off Shai Gilgeous-Alexander era

The biggest takeaway from any Paul trade, whether to the Knicks or Heat, is how trusting the Thunder are in the future of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He’s played primarily next to Paul in their backcourt this season, but his long term fit is at point.

They acquired him in the trade that saw Paul George end up next to Kawhi Leonard on the Los Angeles Clippers, in what was thought of as the kick start to Oklahoma’s rebuild.

But Gilgeous-Alexander has been an absolute product of his mentor this season, and monster for opposing defenses. The second-year guard is averaging 19.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.1 steals this season on a 47/35/80 shooting split.

In Gilgeous-Alexander, the Thunder have found their point guard of the future. Rather quickly I’ll note, considering Russell Westbrook left just last summer. But he’s been the biggest winner of that deal for Paul, having one of the best to do it there to guide him for year two.

And they acquire two young pieces in Ntilikina and Knox, as well as New York’s draft selection in next year’s class. It’s all about the rebuild for Oklahoma City, and who they have to steer them through it at the helm. Now, and later.
