The Celtics rookie draft class

The Boston Celtics have to be pleased with what they have seen thus far from their rookie draft class this year. Romeo Langford (14th overall), Grant Williams (22nd overall), Carsen Edwards (33rd overall), and Tremont Waters (51st overall). All four draftees have all immensely improved and some have even made an impact on some games this season.

Williams has been impressive thus far throughout his rookie season. He has proved to be a quality center at times when the Celtics need him to transition into the position during games. He is averaging 3.6 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game this season. Williams and his defensive mindset has earned him a few starts during the season. He is the only drafted rookie who has not played for the Maine Red Claws this season.

Considering his hot start through the Summer League and preseason, Edwards has had a slower transition to the NBA than most people expected. He has only been featured in 35 games this season and has averaged three points and 1.2 rebounds per game. But what has been most promising about Edwards is his production in the G-League with the Maine Red Claws, where he is averaging 23.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game.

Waters has certainly been the most exciting rookie out of the bunch this season. Although he is on a two-way contract, he has played a few minutes on the NBA court’s, logging in nine games for the Celtics this season. Waters has become an All-Star in the G-League after averaging 19.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game. He has shown tremendous upside and the future is bright for Waters and the C’s.

A lot of people have been disappointed with the way things have played out with Langford this season. Although he has been injured for most of his rookie season, the Celtics drafted Langford for a reason and it shows they believe in what he could become in the future. Langford has only played in 22 games this season and is averaging 2.8 points and one rebound per game this season.

There is a huge upside for all of these rookies and it’s definitely has been one of the exciting parts of the season.
