Michigan man comes home

The first 10-day contract signing for the Pistons this season is also the one with the most experience. Derrick Walton, Jr. is the most veteran of the three players entering the lineup this week. Take that with a grain of salt as 40 games of NBA experience since the beginning of the 2017-2018 NBA season is far from a veteran presence, having spent time with the Heat that season and getting back into the league with the LA Clippers this season.

Following his season with the Miami Heat he went back and forth between the EuroLeauge and the G League. His time with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Heat affiliate, he averaged 16.1 points per game and 7 assists per game on nearly 38 percent from distance. His numbers were down with the Agua Caliente Clippers this season but is looking to finally stick.

Coming back home to his hometown Detroit Pistons will allow him to play in a comfortable situation with little-to-no pressure. The former Michigan Wolverine will be competing in a crowded young backcourt for minutes and will need to set himself apart.

Bruce Brown, Khyri Thomas, Luke Kennard and Jordan Bone will all be young guys looking for minutes, but taking a flier on Walton was well worth it. There is potential with Walton, as he got some minutes with the Clippers early this season.
