3 young players get their first shot to earn a home with the Detroit Pistons
By Corey Rausch
The tank is on for the Detroit Pistons. Players will get a chance to earn a place in the future. It starts with Khyri Thomas, Donta Hall and Derrick Walton.
Now that the tank is fully on and Reggie Jackson and Markieff Morris have been bought out, the Detroit Pistons truly have committed to the youth movement. Following the opening of these two roster spots the team added two 10-day contracts to the roster, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle and find a rotation player that could stick into next season.
Between the two-way contracts and the additions of 10-day contracts, the roster will be fluid from here on out, giving fans the chance to see young players. This will be tough on the coaches as the effort and continuity will be disjointed but head coach Dwane Casey has made it clear that effort will go a long way in determining who sees the floor, and who likely sticks around.
While this season may be lost, looking into the potential of the likes of Donta Hall and Derrick Walton, Jr. is what this time of year is made of. Furthermore, Khyri Thomas finally coming back from injury feels like a similar situation for a team taking fliers on players. What this season holds for all three of them, and whoever the next slew of 10-day guys are is the first step to setting up the Pistons future.
As Dwane Casey said in his post-game press conference after the loss to the Denver Nuggets, there will be times where it feels like the Grand Rapids Drive is the team we are watching, not the Detroit Pistons. For all the people complaining about too many veterans getting minutes, there are 11 players on the roster age 24 or younger.
In the Nuggets game alone we saw Christian Wood, Thon Maker, Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, Sekou Doumbouya and the aforementioned new additions. Bruce Brown and Luke Kennard will be back in the lineup before long. So will these fresh faces make an impact and what can we expect from them?
