NBA Power Rankings Week 19: LA Clippers get aggressive on buyout market
By Phil Watson
Last week: Beat Miami 129-124, beat Dallas 111-107
This week: Monday at Philadelphia, Wednesday vs. Orlando, Friday vs. Brooklyn, Saturday vs. Portland
The Atlanta Hawks might be figuring some things out, based on the early returns after the All-Star break. Before the break, the Hawks were 4-24 against teams that are currently at or above the .500 mark. Since returning, Atlanta has posted back-to-back wins over the Heat and Mavericks at home.
Rookie Cam Reddish also seems to be figuring some things out.
After averaging 9.3 points per game in 48 games before the All-Star festivities, Reddish has 36 points in the first two games back and has hit double-figures in four consecutive games and 10 of his last 11 outings, with the lone exception coming in the Feb. 1 game at Dallas when he played just seven minutes before leaving with a concussion.
First-time All-Star Trae Young, meanwhile, seems to have things fairly well under control. Young on Thursday lit up the Heat for his first career 50-piece, hitting 12-of-25 overall and 8-of-15 from deep to go with eight assists ad two steals. Over the two games, Young scored 75 points with 18 dimes, eight rebounds and two steals, hitting 22-of-46 overall and 11-of-23 from long range.
Last week: Won at Washington 113-108, lost at Miami 124-105
This week: Monday vs. Miami, Wednesday vs. Philadelphia, Friday at New Orleans, Saturday vs. Indiana
The J.B. Bickerstaff era got off to a nice start for the Cleveland Cavaliers with a come-from-behind road win at Washington on Friday, but the Cavs were just roadkill on Dwyane Wade‘s big night in Miami on Saturday to take their 14th loss in 17 games.
Cleveland.com columnist Terry Pluto said Saturday the team got what it wanted — a replacement for coach John Beilein — and should cut out the excuses. Harsh take, but essentially correct. Coaches may rule the college roost, but it will forever be easier to fire a coach than to turn over a 15-man roster.
Cedi Osman had a nice game in Miami despite the blowout with 19 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists in 38 minutes but was just 6-for-15 overall and 4-for-11 from 3-point range. In the road back-to-back, Osman had 35 points, 17 boards and nine assists in 67 minutes, hitting 11-of-22 from the floor and 7-of-16 from deep.
