Los Angeles Lakers: 3 buyout candidates to consider
The Los Angeles Lakers might look to strengthen their core via the buyout market, where a lot of quality players are waiting to be signed.
During the 2020 trade deadline period, the Los Angeles Lakers decided to stay put and avoid making any last-minute moves.
On the one hand, it is always good to pursue strengthening your team, as the playoffs can often conceal an entirely different degree of difficulty. Injuries and fatigue are pretty much always culpable for a team’s success, meaning that being overly prepared could even win you a title.
On the other hand, as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Right now the Lakers are the exact opposite of “broke”. As the best team in the Western Conference, they have remained a well-oiled machine since the beginning of the season, shifting the title odds heavily in their favor.
Despite holding back on any unnecessary moves during the trade period, the Lakers can still make some pretty big moves to upgrade their roster.
Their frontcourt seems to be very strong, a phrase we’ve said countless times in NBA history but rarely during the past decade.
Kyle Kuzma, Dwight Howard and Javale McGee seem to be complimenting the star duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis perfectly, allowing them to be the franchise cornerstones while being towards the top of the MVP voting. Add a –potentially returning– DeMarcus Cousins to the mix and you have yourself a championship frontcourt.
Where the Lakers could use a bit of help would be at the guard spots. It’s not that something appears to be wrong with the team’s guards but, could you really say no to an extra boost of shooting and defense off the bench?
It should be noted that to sign a player out of the free agency/buyout pool, the Lakers would have to release a member of their current roster. The most realistic candidates would be Troy Daniels or Talen Horton-Tucker.
Due to the existence of several potential quality buyout players, here are the ones that would benefit the Los Angeles Lakers the most.
