Montrezl Harrell still atop NBA Sixth Man of the Year Ladder
By Phil Watson
If Lou Williams is going to add a record fourth Sixth Man of the Year award to his resume, he might have some work to do.
Williams has won each of the last two seasons in addition to receiving the award in 2014-15 after his lone season in Toronto, but his play was spotty in the final push before the All-Star break.
He started two of the LA Clippers’ nine games over the last four weeks, a period during which LA was just 5-4, and averaged 18.2 points, 4.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 29.9 minutes per game. But Williams was a frosty 37.5 percent shooter overall and hit a downright frigid 25.0 percent on 4.4 3-point attempts per game.
He’s appeared in 52 of LA’s 55 games this season, making eight starts, and is averaging 19,5 points, 5.9 assists and 3.1 boards in 30.0 minutes per game while shooting 41.2 percent overall and 35.0 percent on 5.1 deep balls a night.
Williams did have a high-volume game to close out the schedule before the break, scoring 35 points with eight assists, six rebounds and two blocks in a double-overtime loss at Boston on Feb. 13. But Williams needed 33 shots to do it, going 14-for-33 on the night and hitting 3-of-9 from long range.
