What to watch for from every NBA team in the second half
Cleveland Cavaliers: Andre Drummond alongside Sexland
The Cleveland Cavaliers’ deadline acquisition of Andre Drummond was unexpected, but even at a hefty price tag, perhaps they view the former NBA All-Star as their potential center for the future.
Drummond is only 26 years of age and has been one of the best rebounders in NBA history since entering the league in 2012. On a team with a young backcourt of Collin Sexton and Darius Garland, his screen-setting and finishing ability could result in a semi-formidable two-man game with either guard.
It’s been only two games since Drummond arrived in Cleveland, where the trio has played a combined 23 minutes, none of which have been pretty.
During that time, Cleveland posted an offensive rating of 96.2 and a defensive rating of 120.8. For perspective, the worst mark on the season in both of those categories is 103.9 and 115.3, respectively.
Drummond has a $28.7 million player option for next season he will most certainly opt into. Given how little Cleveland sacrificed to acquire him, there’s no guarantee of a re-sign after that, and the free-agent market isn’t likely to be too hot past a certain price point either.
This shouldn’t put all the pressure on Drummond to make his new environment work. It will certainly be interesting to watch, though, to see if this new chapter in his career alongside two talented guards can be the start of something special.
