3 Reasons LaMelo Ball can save the Cleveland Cavaliers
By Tony Pesta
2. Versatile scorer
LaMelo Ball’s first rise to fame aside from his father’s antics came when he scored 92 points in a high school game. Since then, the prolific scorer has worked on adding more tricks to his bag and has become a talented offensive prospect.
Ball averaged 17.0 points as a rookie in the NBL but shot an ugly 24.0 percent from the 3-point line and 37.0 percent from the field. This inconsistency from the field comes with his tendency to shoot the ball at a high rate. Ball ranked fourth in the NBL for shot attempts at 16.8 a game.
His poor shooting splits can be enough to turn you off but trust that Ball is a skilled scorer. He is a lanky athlete and utilizes all of his lengths when attacking the rim. This helps him stride past smaller defenders on his way to the bucket.
Furthermore, Ball has great control of his body and is exceptional at drawing contact. Ball frequently finishes over bigger defenders by absorbing contact and having great touch all around the backboard.
The most concerning aspect of his game is his 3-point shooting. Ball is not the first of his brothers to have a questionable looking jump shot but if the improvements to Lonzo Ball‘s shot mechanics over the years is any reason for optimism then we should be hopeful for Melo moving forward.
It’s important to remember that Ball is a raw prospect and has a long way to go before being considered an elite scorer at the NBA level. However, he has displayed exciting qualities and has the potential to be effective from every spot on the floor.
