Defensive Player: Ian Mahinmi

It’s to the surprise of many, that Ian Mahinmi would be considered for any award other than “Most Ludicrous Contract.” But no, his infamous four-year deal for $64-million has aged like a fine wine, kind of.

Mahinmi’s had a resurgence this season on both the offensive and defensive ends. He’s averaging 7.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and a career-high 1.3 blocks per game. Mahinmi even managed to notch a new career-high in points with 25.

The big man has truly been an anchor in the frontcourt for Washington, who not-so-coincidentally is having one of the worst defensive seasons in NBA history. But it’s been a good year for Mahinmi, who’s preparing to once again embark on the looting journey that is his free agency.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of market he’s put together for himself in this damn near career-best season with the Wizards. And it’ll be even more interesting to see if there’s mutual interest in a return to Washington.

But for now, Mahinmi will settle for the glory of being named the (mid-season) Defensive Player of the Year. Because believe it or not, he may not end the year with the Wizards.

But, more on that here.
