It’s LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo and everyone else on NBA MVP Ladder 4.0
By Phil Watson
LeBron James could be on pace to join some very select company (because, you know, he’s not already there) if he were to win a fifth NBA MVP award this season. James would join Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (six), Michael Jordan and Bill Russell (five each) as the only players to win at least five times.
James had a difficult last four weeks, helping the Los Angeles Lakers through the death of franchise icon Kobe Bryant. He played in 12 games and averaged 23.8 points, 10.6 assists, 8.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 34.8 minutes per game, shooting 48.2 percent overall and hitting 34.2 percent on 6.3 3-point attempts a night.
James dropped 36 points in a blowout of the Spurs on Feb. 4, pulled down 12 rebounds in a 32-point, 14-assist, 12-board triple-double (his 12th of the season) in a win at Denver on Wednesday and handed out 15 assists in a loss to the Rockets on Feb. 6.
The Lakers were 8-4 over that stretch and remain solidly in the lead out West.
James is still on pace to become the first non-guard to lead the NBA in assists per game, averaging a career-high 10.8 dimes nightly, to go with 25.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 34.9 minutes per game.
He’s appeared in 51 of the Lakers’ 53 games this season.
