It’s LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo and everyone else on NBA MVP Ladder 4.0
By Phil Watson
Giannis Antetokounmpo last season joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only Milwaukee Bucks ever to be named NBA MVP. This season, the Greek Freak would like to join Kareem as the only Bucks to win the award in consecutive seasons. Abdul-Jabbar was a three-time MVP winner with Milwaukee, going back-to-back in 1970-71 and 1971-72.
Antetokounmpo played only eight of the Bucks’ 11 games over the last four weeks, with the club going 7-1 when he played and 2-1 when he didn’t. He sat out their Jan. 28 win over the Wizards with a sore right shoulder before missing Monday’s win over the Kings and Wednesday’s loss at Indiana after the birth of his first child.
In those eight games, Antetokounmpo averaged 29.5 points, 16.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 1.0 blocks in 31.6 minutes per game while shooting 53.6 percent overall and hitting 24.1 percent on 3.6 3-point attempts a night. He had a run of five consecutive games with at least 30 points and 15 rebounds, topped by 36 points and a season-high 20 boards in a Feb. 6 win over the 76ers.
Antetokounmpo also handed out 10 assists while picking up his fourth triple-double of the season in a win over the Bulls on Jan. 20, finishing with 28 points and 14 boards.
He’s appeared in 48 of Milwaukee’s 54 games and is averaging career-highs of 30.0 points and 13.5 rebounds along with 5.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks in 30.9 minutes per game, shooting 54.9 percent overall and 31.3 percent on 4.9 3-point attempts a game.
