Portland Trail Blazers’ guard Damian Lillard recently pieced together the most torrid scoring stretch of his career. Does it belong among the all-time shooting streaks in league history?
You haven’t really had fun in this life until you’ve got a chance to listen to writers and fellow peers describe Portland Trail Blazers‘ superstar Damian Lillard before an offensive warpath.
For the Blazers guard, it’s really the calm prior to a typhoon; a train before the steam approaches — a mental, psychological transformation that only takes a few deep breaths and a brief sideline meditation to tap into.
A storm any player who’s stepped toe-to-toe with Damian Lillard can attest to. A storm we got a chance to see at maximum torrent over the last month.
Over the last two games leading into the break, the Blazers dynamic guard eventually cooled off, performing at “only” an All-Star level. But if Lillard has indeed officially returned to planet Earth, his reign of terror dating back to mid-January deserves a closer inspection.
Blazers’ head coach Terry Stotts had this to say about Damian Lillard’s spectacular performances:
"“Don’t ask me about Dame. I’m out of superlatives. Don’t ask me to explain it. … he’s playing exceptional basketball.”"
Like Stotts, most of the players and opponents associated have run out of superlatives that put Lillard’s historic streak, particularly on offense, into perspective.
So, what can we say that hasn’t been said before? The obvious place to begin is with Lillard’s deep ball — the ultimate trump card when comparing what he’s done against opposing shooters in past generations.
