2. Ball movement

Ball movement has been the root of a lot of frustration for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Veteran players such as Tristan Thompson and Kevin Love have been vocal about their disgust with the team’s selfish play at times. The Cavaliers rank 27th in assists per game and sixth in isolation frequency.

Surprisingly, the Cavaliers have found success in their iso-ball style. They have reduced their turnovers and shoot the third-highest percentage in isolation plays. Furthermore, the Cavs rank 11th in the league for points per possession in this category.

Still, it’s hard to say the Cavaliers wouldn’t be a better team with some improved ball movement. Darius Garland leads the squad with 3.3 assists per game, but also turns the ball over at nearly the same rate.

The biggest culprit of selfish play is Collin Sexton. There have been countless times in which Sexton forced a bad shot over the hands of defenders rather than looking to make an extra pass.

The NBA has always favored teams that play as a unit. If the Cavaliers want to find long-term success, they will need to learn how to work together.
